Photography

The museum has a large collection of photography capturing Swindon and the surrounding area since Victorian times. The photography is divided into collections which have been acquired by the museum since it first opened.

The Harris and Woodfield collections of glass plate negatives show Swindon in the late 19th and early 20th century. Because this collection is extremely fragile, it is kept in store and we share reproductions via social media.

The Albert Beaney Collection comprises tens of thousands of images of Swindonians taken between the 1940s and 1960s. Mr Beaney was an amateur photographer and life-long Swindon resident. His collection featured in the 2012 ‘Back to Black and White’ project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
